Dental Tourism - Dental Travel

Combine your dental treatment and your vacation trip!

Dental treatment description.

Obviously, it would not come to mind to make a trip just for minor dental treatment, unless the trip was already planned for its relaxation and adventure quality.

The majority of dental tourists visit the countries of Eastern Europe, the Maghreb, Mexico and countries of Central and South America to receive significant dental treatment involving, among others, the installation of dental implants, crowns and bridges, prostheses on implants or the completion of endodontic treatment.

Be aware that distributors of dental services licensees of these countries follow international scientific procedures and dispense the full range of services, beginning with a comprehensive review, the application of a specific diagnosis and individualize treatment plan and a financial estimate that are established in consultation with the patient. Then the treatment begins.  This is done using the established scientific protection procedures (gloves, mask, glasses) and the sterility of equipment and instruments.

Here is a brief description of some dental treatments.

What is a dental implant?

Dental Implant It is a rod of titanium or titanium coated with a biocompatible material, which has the ability to link seamlessly to your existing bone and whose appearance recalls that of a screw.  When the implant is welded to the bone, a pillar is inset.  The implant is now the cornerstone for a crown or bridge.  Implants are put in place in your jaw and after several months of healing - usually 4 to 6 - they can replace the roots of your natural teeth and support a single tooth, a bridge, a complete or partial denture.

Dental implants integrate with the jaw bone and reproduce the action of the dental roots, they fulfill the role of natural teeth.  In addition to ensuring perfect stability for the fixed or removable prosthesis, the implant stimulates new bone cells, which cease then to atrophy.

DentalImplantDuring the first visit, the dentist performs the installation of the implants.  It is necessary for you to make a second visit to complete the treatment and the fixing of crowns, bridges or dentures, 4 to 6 months after the first visit.

Warning: all patients are not good candidates for dental implants and the dentist will evaluate each case according to professional criteria.  You should know that sometimes the installation of implants fails, and this without any malpractice action by the dentist.  There can be no guarantee of success for implants, but the success varies between 90 to 95%.

Crowns

Dental CrownA crown is a small cap of ceramic or ceramic/metal material in the shape of a tooth that is fixed on a grounded tooth or a root, which after endodontic treatment (removal of the dental pulp or nerve) received a pivot, or an implant.  Provisional crowns will be installed during the period when dentures are manufactured.  These crowns are made with great care, they look authentic.

A bridge:

Dental BridgeA  dental bridge is composed of 2 or more crowns, which serve as attachment point (piece) for one or more missing teeth.  There are different kinds of bridges. Standards crowns or bridges consist of a base metal (Chrome/Cobalt) covered with a ceramic outer layer of the color of the email of your teeth.  These crowns have a lifespan of about 20 years, and are the most common in Europe and America.  There are also gold crowns with 100% ceramic for those with allergies or for those who prefer this method.  Alternatively, all ceramic crowns and ceramics /Zirconia provide more natural and more aesthetic appearance.  They are lighter than traditional crowns and antiallergic.

Prostheses on implants

Prosthesis on implantsDepending on the number of implants used, it is possible to make fixed or removable prostheses.  The fixed prosthesis is 100% supported by implants.  It is generally not in contact with the mucosa.  This is obviously very stable.  The removable prosthesis is supported by both implants and gum.

Different elements will guide your choices to one or another of these options.  The residual bone, the aesthetics and ease of hygiene are just some of many factors to consider.

Periodontal diseases

This is the biggest cause of dental loss and can occur at any age.

The main symptoms are: bleeding gums when brushing teeth, redness, sensitivity, swollen gums, the gum retracts revealing the roots of teeth, the teeth move, change position, pus appears between the gum and the tooth, you have bad breath, your dentures no longer fit.

Causes:

All forms of periodontal diseases are infectious and are caused by bacteria in dental plaque.  If plaque is not remove, it hardens and turns into tartar.  Toxins produced by the bacteria attack the gums causing inflammation, redness, swelling: this is gingivitis.  If gingivitis is not treated, it turns into periodontitis: bone is then destroy.

Diagnosis:

Your practitioner will examine your gums and then probe with a small device to monitor the attachment to the tooth surface and with the use of X-rays estimate the amount of bone present around the tooth.

Treatment:

All treatments are based on the elimination of bacteria in all cases, oral hygiene must be rigorous.  If only the gums are infected (gingivitis), the treatment is scaling and polishing so that the new gum will adheres to the tooth surface and reestablish the character of a healthy gingiva.

If there is accumulation of plaque between teeth and gums, periodontal pockets form (loss of attachment of the gums and resorption of bone around the tooth causing the formation of these pockets). The treatment at this stage is to perform a periodontal curettage under local anesthesia.  It allows you to merge the gum directly on bone after pockets removal.

If periodontal pockets grow again and if bone loss begins, this is periodontitis.  Treatment includes curettage but that does not automatically rebuild the lost bone.  The dentist can then proposed a combined surgical technique that allows to rebuild and promote the regeneration of alveolar bone.  This is the bone graft substitutes for bone, to fill the periodontal pockets and rebuild bone.  By filling the bone substitutes have the advantage of not requiring bone samples and gave very satisfactory results.

Other treatments

There are many other more common dental treatments such as restorations, extractions, complex surgery, placement of facets, whitening of teeth, endodontics, etc.  We will not describe them here.
