Dental Tourism in

Africa/Middle-East

Tunisia / Morocco

For several years, the phenomenon of medical tourism has spread worldwide: Asia, Eastern Europe and now North Africa (Tunisia, Morocco) invaded this sector.  Nearly 12 million tourists mainly from rich countries travel to these countries to carry out medical procedures, cosmetic surgery and dentistry.  In the future, and as for cosmetic surgery, Tunisia became the favored destination for French-speaking dental care tourists.

In 2007, approximately 102 000 foreigners have come to seek treatment in Tunisia, in the fields of cosmetic surgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, cardiovascular surgery, dentistry.  In 2003, only 40 000 persons came.  In addition, 150 000 foreigners have taken advantage of the seawater activities, making Tunisia the second destination in this world specialty.

For French tourists, Tunisia becomes an alternative destination due to two factors: the quality of dental care which meet international standards, as many dentists practicing there have French medical training and the fact that communication is easier because the French is spoken everywhere in Tunisia and that more than one million French persons take their holidays there each year.  It was noted that the choice of travel destinations for medical or dental treatment is strongly influenced by the language spoken in the host country.  Thus, a patient wishing to achieve some health services in french prefer to visit  French-speaking countries such as Tunisia and Morocco, while English patients will look to South Africa, India or Mexico.

In Morocco, this trend is still in its infancy, it was not well developed due to lack of travel agencies specialized in the field.  However, some dentists have already started to show interest and offer dental care.

 Turkey

Dental care prices and waiting times in some countries of Western Europe and America are enormous.  That is why today the trend is going abroad.  For example, in Turkey, where dental care is of excellent quality but at much lower price and a shorter waiting time.

Turkey has specialized in dental tourism for many years.  Make no mistake, if this phenomenon has recently appeared in France (at least in the media) and in America, Germans, Swiss and Austrians have come to Turkey for the last 15 years to receive dental treatment (implants, prostheses, bridges ) and leave with a smile!  Their affluence is proof of the quality of care they receive: 1 million Austrians (1 adult in 3) received treatment while in Turkey last year.

Israel

Israel enjoys a solid reputation for dental care.  Each year, several thousand tourists, Swiss, English and Americans come to seek treatment.  Besides the quality of care it is mainly the prices that attract massive foreign patients.  Low overhead and charges on the profession enable the dentists to offer rates cheaper than in France for implants, bridges and crowns for example, using modern equipment (radiology, laser and special software), superior or equivalent to those found in Western Europe and America.

 Egypt /Jordan

The real boom in dental tourism is registered in Tunisia and Egypt.  In these countries, there are travel agencies that specialize in medical and dental tourism.  These agencies offer on the Internet a free consultation and quote.

Jordan, is also developing an offer on this segment.  According to the Private Hospitals Association of Jordan, 250 000 foreign patients from 84 different nationalities were treated in 2007 in this country.  Medical and dental tourists visits in Jordan increased by 10% per year for the last 3 years.
